Ellensburg, Washington Recreation
Ellensburg, Washington is a city of 17,000 located in the central part of the state, 108 miles southeast of Seattle. It is located in the Kittitas Valley at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountains. It is a great area for recreation. Fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, motorcycling, AV riding, rafting, kayaking, golfing, are all popular activities.
Ellensburg is also an excellent area for winter sports. There are four major ski areas within a two hours drive from Ellensburg: Stevens Pass, Mission Ridge, White Pass, and Snoqualmie Summit, which is the closest at one hour to the west. Cross-Country skiing is also available at Snoqualmie Pass. Snowmobiling and snowshoeing are also popular winter activities.
The Ellensburg area is great for trout fishing. There are numerous nearby rivers, lakes, and ponds for fishing. The Yakima River skirts the southern edge of the city. There are numerous ponds near the river with public fishing access. The Cle Elum, Teanaway, and Columbia Rivers are all within a half hours drive of Ellensburg. There are several ponds near the river that also make nice fishing spots. A license issued by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is required to fish and can be easily obtained at sporting goods stores and other locations.
Ellensburg is also a popular hunting area. Deer, elk, pheasant, quail, duck, and grouse can be hunted in the area during the appropriate season and adhering to state hunting license laws and restrictions. Other protected wildlife reside in the Ellensburg area. Big Horn Sheep can occasionally be seen in the beautiful Yakima River Canyon, which is just a few miles south of Ellensburg.
There are many excellent hiking and mountain biking trails near Ellensburg. The Umtanum Recreation Area is one particularly nice hiking destination. It is located about fifteen miles south of the Ellensburg on State Route 821 near the Yakima River Canyon. Umtanum Creek flows through the area and basalt cliffs towering several thousand feet above the river are nearby. There is a parking lot and a footbridge across the Yakima River providing access to the areas hiking trails.
