On Location February 08 - Ecuador and Galapagos
I have recently returned from 18 days in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, and I'm still stunned by what a place is incredible. I loved everything in Ecuador: the food is excellent - (although a little too much at times), the landscape is varied and breathtaking, the people so friendly, and the house unique. There is so much to this great country, but in the interest of time to say here are a few of the highlights.
The Amazon Jungle lives up to its reputation as an amazing place and the route there was an experience in itself. A 30 minute flight from Quito took me to a small town called Coca, where I of motorboat traveled for two hours along the Napo River. This was paddling through a simple 30 minute walk through the jungle to the edge of the lake and finally a 15 minute over the calm water in a small dugout followed to the hut. I really felt like I was in the middle of nowhere!
The landscape was so lush and living, crowding the plants for each available space. I was confused by the enormous diversity of flora and fauna, but the leaders with their home-made expertise were in encyclopedic knowledge. They were incredible, spotting things that were difficult to once again they had to see me attention!
I spent my time there enjoy the many activities offered by the Canopy Walk, three towers each thirty-six meters high with rigid pavements between the hundred-meter long were. Thankfully it did not feel that high as I could not see the ground, only the tops of the trees! It was great to see waiting on what birds Past came and it was also pleasantly cooler than the moist forest floor. There was also lick a butterfly house, a parrot, many forest roads and streams in canoes, either during the day or to explore at night.
Returning from a jungle walk, I was at the front of the dugout canoe SA The light was fading, and as such hundreds of bats began swarming over the water in search of bugs. I was so much I had to close their eyes eyelash batting and paddle "blind" but fortunately, my guide, more used bats and assured the "infallible navigation, controlled by the back.
Ninety minutes south of Quito is the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes ", a long valley dotted with small villages and surrounded by amazing volcanoes, many of which are still visibly active. There are many things to see and do in the area, from visiting local Indian market to ride around the National Park of Cotopaxi and Antisana. I stayed at the Hacienda in this area, I had a great view of volcano Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. It is a perfect pyramid of snow covered volcano at sunset and I was lucky, Watch It Glow pink.
Haciendas All I saw was unique, yet at the same great rustic, cozy and comfortable. They have large lounges with open fires, lots of family photos and books about the area and the dinner is always a great three-course affair was (like lunch for that matter!) in a healthy dining. You also have the most beautiful Gardens, not quite clean, but with stunning flowers and plants.
I finished my trip to the Galapagos Islands, uncertain whether they live up to their great Reputation. Having seen for myself, I can safely say they did it.
The islands are much more beautiful than I had imagined with so many more animals than I all had hoped and, amazingly, the man without fear. I do not think I stopped to say "Incredible," and "Amazing", the whole Time I was there! Even my night in Puerto Ayora, a small town on the island of Santa Cruz, I had to watch my step so I do not on a sea lion and iguana tread have. Our hotel had a great blue heron was sitting on the edge of the pool, while people were sunbathing next to him and splash pool. Another hotel that I had visited a sea lion was sitting by the pool hats own business and others had five iguanas sunning themselves by the outdoor bar area. The boundary between human and animal certainly blurs here.
My time was spent either in the Galapagos wildlife seen on the land or water snorkeling with him. The sea lions while his vocals on the whole Country are much more playful in the water - they swim up to you and your bubble mask or swimming towards you and to the last minute diving among you. By the time you have, to see where they have gone round again they are ahead of you. On land, I sat a few feet of a newly born sea lion pup - just two hours old - while from his Mother suckled. This is as it should be the world peacefully with man and nature interact with the same respect.
