Kayaking Gear
Although kayaking is a relatively safe outdoor activity, it is essential to take necessary precautions to completely eliminate any element of risk. Hence, paddlers must always carry some basic kayaking gear that would secure them from any potential hazard so that they can enjoy the waves even more.
Basic Kayaking Gear
It is important for all paddlers - be it amateurs or experienced, to carry some of the basic things along with them. They are as follows:
1. Kayaking Helmets: Helmets are bare essentials for any kayaking session, especially for whitewater or sea kayaking. Although helmets of varying styles and patterns are available, paddlers are recommended to buy ones that are strong and fully cover the head. Also, check the size of the helmet for a perfect fit before making a purchase. They should not choose a helmet merely on the basis of its aesthetic feature. There are even full face helmets available that extend to cover the entire jaw line. If kayaking in rough conditions, paddlers can opt for multi-impact helmets that protect your head especially in whitewater kayaking.
2. Kayaking Life Jackets: Like the helmets, life jackets too come in different sizes and paddlers are recommended to select the one that fits them perfectly (body hugging). This is especially applicable for women, young adults and children. While selecting a life jacket, choose the one that allows unrestricted arm movements, good padding, preferably neoprene padding at the shoulders and drain holes. Most life jackets available today have a stretchable side panels that makes it easier to wear. Some jackets also have an open-weave mesh to allows the sweat and body heat to escape and maintain optimum body temperature.
3. Kayaking Gloves: There are special kayaking gloves available for winter and summer conditions that protect your hands and provide good grip to hold the paddles. These gloves are especially useful during winters to prevent the hands from becoming numb and keeping them warm throughout. Usually these gloves are made of neoprene. For better protection, paddlers can even opt for kayaking mitts.
4. Kayaking Drysuits: Drysuits are extremely important, especially during winter or in cold conditions. These suits are essential to maintain a constant body temperature and prevent any threat of hypothermia. While buying a drysuit a paddler must ensure that they are durable and endure all the rigours of kayaking. Also, it is recommended to always opt for drysuits that are not very tight, are breathable and do not restrict any movements.
5. Kayaking Socks & Shoes: There are special neoprene socks available for kayaking that provide perfect cushioning and warmth. While selecting kayaking shoes, paddlers can also opt for wetsuit shoes or river shoes that provide good grip and protection.
6. Kayaking Dry Bags: Dry bags are essential to keep your kit safe and dry, especially during sudden rains. These bags are made of nylon that keep the water out and also keeps it light weight.
7. Kayaking Elbow Pads: The elbow pads used by paddlers comprise of armour panels that protect the forearm and the elbow, especially in whitewater kayaking. Also, the pads are very flexible so that they allow free arm movement while paddling.
These are some of the basic elements that are vital and make the kayaking kit complete.
