Four Great Reasons to Visit Alaska
When you think of traveling to Alaska, you may think only of cruise lines, salmon spawning, and whale watching, but Alaska is an awesome place to visit whether you arrive via cruise ship, private car, or plane. Activities for visitors are many, and their variety may surprise you.
Obviously one great reason to visit Alaska is to watch the wildlife. Beyond the well known whales, salmon, and bears, there are many opportunities to see moose, lynx, wolves, dall sheep, caribou, fox, coyotes, and more on land. You may take a guided tour or head to a wildlife refuge to see these animals, or you might just come across them in the course of your planned activities. Sea life is also abundant around the coasts, especially in the many fjords around the Kenai Peninsula. These under-water valleys, carved by glaciers that are still "calving" are home to many species including sea otters, puffins, sea lions, kittiwakes, humpback and orca whales, harbor seals, oyster catchers and more. Bird watchers will find many beautiful species spend time in Alaska, but may be particularly interested in the migrating shore birds in Homer or the snow geese in the Kenai River Flats.
To get closer to the wildlife, you may want to test your hand at Alaska's fabled fishing. Charter boats, fish camps, guided float trips, and wilderness lodges specializing in fishing opportunities abound and offer year round fishing for Halibut, Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, and 5 Salmon species, and those are just in the waters around Kodiak! Another great reason to visit Alaska is all of the outdoor activities readily available for all skill levels.
