what kind of kayak do i need?

ive been before on a rented kayak and im looking to get my own soon but i live on a lake no rapids of any sort but i have friends that go down coosa witch has some not very big rapids....but i dont know what kind i would need for a begginner like myself ... a sit on top or a sit in...i was lookin at the emotion comet{sit in} and the emotion spitfire{sit on top}......please help

I am not familiar with the Emotion brand kayaks but I can tell you that there really is no perfect boat for both lake kayaking and river/rapid kayaking. Boats that are great on lakes are typically really hard to manuever on rivers, or you get a river boat and it will be slow and track poorly on lakes.

There is a new boat on the market made by Liquid Logic, it is called the Remix XP. This boat is made with river running in mind (the body of it is very similar to a whitewater kayak), but it has a drop down skeg so it tracks better on open water.

Another option is to get a recreational kayak (because you live on a lake, so you will obviouly be kayaking on a lake more than a river). If this is the route that you decide to go make sure whatever kayak you pick has a flat rounded bottom, with smooth rounded sides (aka soft chine). The soft chine will make it easier to make quick turns on the river. I personally like the Current Designs Kestrel 120 as a option for mostly lake kayaking and some rivers. It is really quick through the water, turns on a dime, has bulk heads, some storage room, and it is a great value for the price.

Hope this helps some. Good luck finding your new boat.
