Air conditioning blasting ~ radio blaring ~ and the highway opens up to stop lights and stores. The first set of stop lights gives you the opportunity to select a grocery store, bank, realty office, a highly recognizable 711 and a few taco stands. If you turn East at this corner the road will bring you towards the beach with loads of delectable restaurants and accommodations. About 1km north of the intersection is the famed Tulum Ruins where tourist gather daily for a walk/talk regarding the history of the ruins that guarded the coast. As you head into Tulum you immediately notice the highway branches off each side with a side road that allows you to visit the local markets and shops that colorfully line the highway. The side roads let you easily turn off the highway and park your car so you can stroll and purchase at all the local handicrafts and gifts. As you pass by the shops you will hear "Lady, come see my shop - best shop in Tulum - be my first customer today and get best prices" Whether you were about to enter the shop or not you will be tempted to step in and you will have a big smile on your face as you are greeted by the shop keep that just called you in. Once inside your senses will be overloaded with sounds and sights ~ colorful blankets and sarongs, t-shirts, hammocks, beaded bracelets and necklaces, ceramics and pottery, and of course cigars and tequila. Barter with them as they get a real kick out of seeing you squirm with the transaction.
Once you are on the inside streets - the double road - of Tulum you can walk to all the places you would like to see. Most of the travelers you see are backpackers since Tulum has been touted as the backpacker haven of Mexico. This backpacker atmosphere helps keep Tulum safe with a nice steady slow pace and it doesn't have the expensive airs that its high end cousins Playa del Carmen and Cancun have to offer. In Tulum you will find guest houses, cabanas, hostels and huts as well as the 5 star hotels. You can book ahead of time or just arrive and scope out your accommodations as you need them. The scuba shops that surround the main street and beach areas will teach you everything you need to know about scuba or snorkeling and even take you into a cenote.
Just 10 minutes from Tulum is Xel-Ha Natural Wonder - a family park where you can go snorkeling, tubing, kayaking, try Snuba or Sea Trek, see loads of Mexican animals or just walk around taking in the beauty of the area. Ever wanted to try swimming with dolphins? Try it out here - where you can do your dolphin swim in the morning and have a relaxing massage in the afternoon..................ah what a way to spend the day.
So, when in Tulum make sure you walk the double roads for your best Tulum adventure.
